Persian Empire Summary- The Persian Empire conquered vast amounts of land in a short amount of time. They ruled their empire in a fair and just way. Although they had a supreme leader, they were split up into provinces to keep order throughout the empire. People were able to keep their religion and form their own laws within their province, which kept many people from revolting against the emporer. But, The emporer remained the supreme ruler of the land. They built large roads that made them able to trade with other civilizations. They also were the earliest civilization to use a set value coin system, which made overall trade easier. Slogan- All great things start small.
Government- Cyrus was the supreme ruler of Persia in its early stages. His kindness toward conquered peoples showed how wise and tolerant he was. For example, his generals prevented their soldiers from looting the villages they pass through, unlike other armies. The government of Persia survived for so long by combining a monarchy with local self-government. After the death of King Cyrus, Darius took control of Persia by force. After spending the early years of his reign puttin down revolts, he started focusing on conquest. Although he was a great and noble warrior, his real genius lay in administration. He divided his empire into 20 provinces, which were roughly similar to the homelands of the people he conquered. The people of each province still practiced their own religion under Persian rule. They also spoke their own languages and many followed their own laws as well. Darius still ruled with overall power, and in each province Darius installed a governor in each province, called a satrap. He also appointed a military leader and tax collecter to each province. This kept order in the vast empire during his rule.
